Chapter 12

The Stealth Move

The man was going at least sixty miles per hour. The buildings on both sides of the river were whirring past, and the skin on Jack and Max’s cheeks was being pulled back to their ears. The brothers laughed at how silly they looked.

“I guess £5 buys you speedy service!” hollered Max over the noisy engine. At least Max’s wet clothes were starting to dry in the wind.

After crossing under a bridge, the driver hung a right down a narrow canal. He cut his speed in half, and Jack and Max found themselves in a peaceful community.

There were stilted wooden houses on both sides with children playing on the banks. Two five-year-old boys did a cannonball from their dock, trying to splash Jack and Max as they passed. The brothers waved to them. The boys giggled and waved back.

After a few minutes, Jack spied a sign suspended over the canal.
